Can I Replace My Roof in The Winter?

roofing company projects in winter sunny days

While it is recommended to postpone major roofing work, such as roof installation, until spring, when the weather is milder and roofing work is easier and more comfortable, the truth is that roofs can be safely replaced by a skilled Lansing roofing company during the winter, too, with certain limitations.

Some roofing materials can be correctly installed in any temperature, while others can be handled only among certain temperature and humidity conditions. For example, the ideal temperature for asphalt shingles is between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, the lowest temperature that still allows for shingle installation being 40 degrees. When the temperature outside drops under that threshold, the shingles become more brittle and break more easily and the adhesives used for fixing the shingles also change and become less efficient. Many synthetic materials, such as the TPO and EPDM used on flat roofs also have limitation related to temperature. However, there are many other materials that can be worked with the year around. Metal roofing materials and the tiles made from clay or cement are unaffected by outdoor temperatures – they can be just as efficiently installed on hot summer days and on freezing days, the limit being the willingness of the person performing the installation to work among harsh circumstances.
