How to Keep Your Gutters Healthy

Autumn and Spring

Early in the spring, as well as in autumn, an inspection of the gutter system is very necessary if you want to be sure that it will stay operational throughout the year, avoiding unwanted water infiltrations or leaks.

The recommendation of the specialists is to maintain the gutters periodically, to avoid their premature deterioration. Maintenance operations must include:

  • Cleaning the dirt, leaves, twigs and other elements that fall in the gutters and present a blocking potential or cause an insufficient capacity of the gutter system to collect rainwater
  • Sealing the sensitive areas of the gutter system (covers, joints etc.)
  • Checking that there are no elements blocked in the downspouts that might prevent the water flow

Gutters and downspouts are particularly prone to damage in the winter, due to snowfalls. Under the weight of the snow, some of the parts of the gutters and downspouts can break down, requiring replacements, so hire one of the Lansing siding companies to do an inspection the damage. The frost-thaw phenomenon can also affect the joints and the overall good functioning of the gutter system. Not least, the formation of the so-called "ice caps" on the downspouts can also lead to their deterioration.

Besides periodic gutters cleaning, it is not a bad idea to think about protecting them furthermore, with gutter screens; they are easy to install and will keep maintenance worries away for a longer time.
